Echoes for Ainola is written for my two (oboist and violist) friends who share with me a great obsession for Jean Sibelius' music. The piece is based on the deeply emotional oboe solo in the 3rd movement of Sibelius' second symphony. The piece abstracts out the repeated Bb motif of that solo and transforms it in a mystical interplay between the two voices to evoke the snowy Finnish home of Sibelius. Through writing, I got to learn that oboe and viola is one of the most magical instrument combinations ever :)
